Law to Protect Rela, Not You, Folks

Govt to act against Rela members who abuse their powers - The Star, 25th Oct 2006
  • Action will be taken against Rela members who abuse the powers given to them to help arrest illegal immigrants, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad.
  • Radzi was commenting on the recent protest by the residents in Cheras that Rela members misused their powers to crash into their homes after breaking door locks and smashing gates during their raid to arrest illegals.
  • "Rela is a voluntary organisation. When they conduct the raids, they are given the power to enter the premises and then to arrest,'' he said, adding that he meant ''business premises'' and ''not dwelling houses.''
  • Asked if they could enter without a search warrant, Radzi said: "They have the powers to do it. They are empowered by the law.''
  • "But if any Rela member oversteps their powers, I'll take care,'' he stressed.

If RELA are being empowered by the law to enter premises without a search warrant, it means the law itself does not protect the citizens. This is unacceptable, it is a lobed sided empowerment and those who being affected by the recent incidents should stand up and voice for a change.

I've seen Rela setting up roadblocks to stop motorists. Without the presence of the police summore.

Talking about the law, even the local COuncil people are above the law. How many times have these dog shooters broke into people's premises and shoot their dogs?

It shows that how people abused the authority given easily and this is a sad scene for our country.

I noticed there are a number people, not even go for the very basic 2-day RELA course, already wearing RELA uniform and doing RELA tasks.

Also, a number of RELA members, being promoted to Corpral or Seargent, before even going for further RELA courses.

So, where is the quality of RELA? Anyone can wear RELA uniform as long as he registered with the Head of Platoon RELA at his area.

By right, any person to become RELA member, must at least attended the 2-day course. However, I noticed many are not!

RELA has many useful courses and training, but many members don't attend. That's why the quality of RELA is bad in overall.

Many RELA memebers are not been trained. Although there are many courses available for RELA members, a lot of them didn't attend. So, many RELA members don't know clearly the scope of their tasks. If a RELA member gone through the courses & training, then he will be a good RELA man.

So, in overall, the quality of RELA is low, because most of them didn't go for the courses/training. They feel arrogant when wearing green uniform similiar to army, and they will try to show their power unnecessarily to the public. It is something like gangster!

So, RELA members, please train up to become more professional!
